The Master Gardener Program in Florida ...
Florida began its Master Gardener Program in 1979 following the original model developed in 1972 by the state of Washington.
Since then, 56 of Florida’s 67 counties have active programs involving over 3,835 active Master Gardeners. Each county’s
program is directed by the county Cooperative Extension residential horticultural agent, a faculty member of the University
of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Science (UF/IFAS). Along with other organizations, Florida Master Gardeners
volunteer time, talents and supplies to enable the UF/IFAS to fulfill its mission “to provide informal educational programs
to help Florida residents improve their economic status and quality of life.”
The Florida Master Gardener Program
is an educational opportunity designed to meet the gardening information needs of the community. The program’s purpose
is to provide technical assistance and information in the area of home horticulture to people in the community through qualified
volunteers. Whether through phone calls, home visits, plant clinics, presentations, newsletters, emails, websites or other
efforts, the information provided by Florida Master Gardeners must be unbiased and research based. It must be accurate, current,
and when possible, taken from UF/IFAS publications and research. The mandated focus and emphasis of the program is to extend
the information being developed at the University of Florida or other land-grant universities to the people of Florida.
